Paddock in cute Cambridge town is such a cool little food joint. They have a massive range of healthy salads and amazing burgers (healthy ones) - my favourite is their vege falafel burger jam packed with healthy greens and homemade relish. Healthy can be tasty and these guys prove just that. Definitely worth a stop if travelling along Waikato country.
Little Bird Organics, Auckland
Little Bird is my favourite cafe in Auckland! I love the way you can eat a delicious treat here without feeling sick afterwards! The only problem is that they aren't on the North Shore!!
Fat Camel Cafe, Whangarei
Everything at the Fat Camel tastes explosively delicious. I love their vegetarian platters with warm breads and all sorts of dips like creamy home-made hummus and epic olive tapenade. They also have amazing desserts like their lemon semolina cake with candied lemons - best ever!
Wild Earth Cafe, Tauranga
All food is vegan and dairy free, and the ingredients organic or naturally grown and locally sourced. On the day I visited there was a heart-warming golden pumpkin and peanut soup on the stove, and I had just had to try the adorably healthy and yummy nutritious tomato, pumpkin and spinach pizza on a flaxseed and almond flour crunchy base. There’s also a good range of gourmet salads and sweet treats, including a delicious raw cacao brownie.
Master of India Restaurant, Napier
These guys make a fantastic vegetable biryani packed with fresh cooked veges, saffron rice and all those beautiful spices of India that makes Indian food what it is is. I love that Master of India, like many indian restaurants, has so many options for those who want to avoid meat in their meal.
Little Black Bird, Hastings
The talented Ben & Lucinda will always create a super-tasty vegetarian option. Actually no matter what your dietary request is I know they will go the extra mile to accommodate. I haven’t got a favourite. It’s all scrummy, tasty and super healthy. Ben says he tries “not to do the generic thing, but create something a little more refined”, based on gluten free, vegetarian and dairy free options, and on what’s in season. “There’s more flavour this way and you can actually taste the vegetable,” he says. Most of the food is organic and sourced locally from The Chefs Garden at Epicurean supplies grown at Waipatu.
The Loving Hut, New Plymouth
The Loving Hut is specifically a vegan restaurant with a few vegetarian options, the food is so good, not only health-wise, but the taste, oh man it makes me want it everyday! You feel totally nourished after eating there, even if you do slightly fill up your plate too much, it all balances out without the animal products! I love their rice meals and their chickpea curry, something I get every time!
Fresh Bowl, Palmerston North
The newest healthy take away option in Palmerston North is delicious! You pick your salad, meat (or meat free) toppings and they put it all in a bowl to take away! Really yummy, fresh and fast without being unhealthy!
Cafe Trocadero, Masterton
The Trocadero salad is world famous in Masterton, this quaint little tea room packs a punch when it comes to their food and presentation! The food is fresh and delicious and their iced chocolates are like none you have ever seen before. Definitely a must stop in Masterton!
Aunty Mena Vegetarian Restaurant & Cafe, Wellington
Aunty Mena’s provides solid Vegan Malaysian and Chinese takeaways at a reasonable price. Everything on the menu is super delicious, and you get extra bonus points for not harming any animals for your dinner! The Tom yum soups are my favourite, with or without dumplings or noodles, and I wouldn’t say no to the wontons either.
East St Vegetarian Café and Bar, Nelson
Dinner below ground is a bit of a novelty - the East Street Cafe is in a basement below a backpackers in Nelson.
