Forgive and Forget: Celebrate the traditional Indian holiday of Holi in living colour.
Autumn is here, Christchurch, so make the most of the last of the warm weather. Move forward through the seasons with the Holi celebration in The Commons, that exhilarating spectacle of colour and dance, or take a quiet wander through the autumn exhibition at the sheltered and sunny Tai Tapu Sculpture Gardens. There's an amazing opportunity for Instagram users to get onto the water with Black Cat Cruises in Akaroa, plus the opening night of the much-anticipated Macbeth at the Court. Meanwhile, littlies will love the Under 5 Fest. Hop to it, Christchurch!
1) Christchurch Holi at The Commons, 70 Kilmore Street
The traditional Indian holiday of Holi is a day to forgive, look ahead and celebrate with colours as a community. Wear old clothes (white T-shirts look great) and comfy shoes, plus cash to buy extra colours on Saturday 5 March from 11am till 3pm. Get your tickets here.
2) Under 5 Fest 2016 at the Table Tennis Canterbury Stadium
Littlies can bring an adult and explore a wide range of hands-on science-based activities. Kids are encouraged to ask questions about the world around them and to discuss and explore the science in their everyday lives. The event is another of Science Alive’s innovative science and technology programmes. For more information see the Facebook page.
3) Tai Tapu Sculpture Garden Annual Autumn Exhibition at the Tai Tapu Sculpture Garden
Eighteen exhibiting sculptors are on show this March in the Tai Tapu Sculpture Garden. The garden is also a native regeneration project; over 6000 natives have been planted since 2010 making the gardens a sanctuary both for sculpture lovers and native birds. The sculpture walk is pram and wheelchair friendly. Entry is $10; bring a picnic and your camera. Allow at least an hour to explore, and note that the garden is in a sheltered valley, so if the weather is awful in town, it's probably still lovely at TSG. For more information and photos of some sculptures, see the website.
4) Macbeth at The Court Theatre
he Scottish play opens at the Court Theatre on Saturday night, starring Mark Hadlow and Lara Macgregor, and directed by Ross Gumbley. Shakespeare’s darkest and most powerful tragedy offers a sharp warning about the lure of power, that continues to ring true after 400 years. To see it onstage is to see our own society played out before us, set in a world we can all relate to. Book at the Court Theatre.
5) Ocean Instameet at Akaroa Wharf
Christchurch Instagrammers are invited to board the Black Cat catamaran in Akaroa for a 90 minute sunset cruise around Akaroa Harbour. This is a great opportunity to learn about, photograph and share the wonders of the area and its wildlife. Influential tourism Instagrammer Kyle Mulinder, aka @bare_kiwi, will be offering tips and there'll be drinks and nibbles pre-cruise. Bring your Instagram profile! Numbers are limited so register ASAP.
