The Fridge in Auckland's Kingsland is renowned for doing some of the best pies in town.

Flaky, puffy pastry, a flavoursome (often interesting) filling and the feeling that it's been homemade with love is what the best New Zealand pies are made of. Indeed, a good local pie is worth travelling for and talking about because it leaves a tasty foodie memory in your mouth long after you've finished your last bite. That's why we've road-tested great pies from Kaitaia to Bluff to scout out the 15 best pies in New Zealand to warm up with this winter. You also might like to check out the best pies in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. Plus if you have a favourite NZ pie shop that you rocks your socks, why not recommend on their Localist listing? C'mon Kiwis ... but remember to always blow on the pie!

Crafty Baker, Auckland

This is one of my favourite pie stops in West Auckland because crafty, creative baker Lee makes some of the tastiest baked goods in the North Island. There's no nasties in the breads, pies and pastries that he bakes with love and the pies are good. They're so good in fact that words can't describe the absolute perfectness of a Crafty Baker pie. I love that they use meat from the local butcher (who is also one of my fave butchers) too. That's why I encourage everyone to seek out this hidden gem in Glen Eden.

The Fridge Cafe, Auckland

There's no better comfort food in winter than a pie and The Fridge in Kingsland creates some of the consistently best pies in Auckland. Handmade fresh daily, light-as-air pastry and the perfect fillings make for an experience to remember. This is one place that makes a real star of the humble pie and is one of my favourite winter spots to dine.

Upperdeck, Paihia

This is the pie of all pies. Even reading it gets my mouth watering. Their tender lamb shanks and kumara encrusted in a short pastry served with a fresh green salad and mint sauce is the bees knees of any pie list. And Paihia is a pretty groovy town to chow down in!

BJ's Bakery Limited, Hastings Central

A very popular family-owned bakery who they do a fantastic peppered steak potato top pie and a Greek lamb pie. In fact anything wrapped in pastry comes out gold.

Turangi Bakehouse and Cafe, Turangi

Good potato top mince pies can be found and consumed hurriedly at the Turangi Bakehouse and Cafe on the way to the wintery slopes of Mt Ruapehu. It's a great winter warmer meal option, and perfectly filling too. The pies are always baked fresh and the pastry is never soggy and greasy.

Beaut Bakery, Taupo

Beaut Bakery makes a mean chicken pie. I love the creamy vege filling and the yummy bits of well-seasoned chicken it is packed with. The pastry is golden, just the right amount of flaky and totally melt-in-your mouth divine. Definitely worth a stop for anyone driving throygh Taupo.

Anderson's Pie Shop, Hawera

Home to the massively sized portion, Anderson Pies are a top competitor for my heart and others hearts around Taranaki. Not only do they have your typical steak pies, but they also make their own apricot pies, something I have never heard of before but they are pretty darn tempting!

Wai Pies, Masterton

With so many eateries in Masterton, don't go past a Wai Pie! They really are delicious and you can taste how authentically handmade they are. They use local ingredients and don't skimp on the fillings!

Clareville Bakery, Carterton

We passed through Carterton a few weeks ago and we called in for something to eat! The bakery firstly smells amazing and the food looks and tastes delicious. They are famous in Carterton for their pies, homemade breads and creative desserts, I can't wait to go back!

Siggie's Pies, Wellington

Siggie's pies were one of the many highlights of last year's Wellington on a Plate. Siggie's meat is sourced from Waikanae butcher - who I have previously expressed my love for - and they do a delish vege option of kumara and coconut. Keep a look out for them at this year's Wellington on a Plate, but in the mean time you can pick some up from Moore Wilsons!

Toad Hall Store & Cafe, Nelson

Great place for a lunchtime pie with lots of different flavours - venison, blue cheese etc as well as the usual suspects. Toad Hall offers great service and high quality food - their pies don’t disappoint.

Sheffield Pie Shop, Sheffield

This famous pie shop is my favourite. When pushed I'll choose the pork and apple every time with its tender chunky pork pieces with real apple slices.

Piko Wholefoods, Christchurch

The best vegetarian pies can be found here. Even meat eaters will go mad for them. Promise!

Who Ate All The Pies, Dunedin

The best makers of handcrafted gourmet pies in Otago is ‘Who at all the Pies?’, a cute food cart at Otago Farmers Market. I always like to head to their bakery in St Kilda too for amazing English Pork Pies and Cornish pasties.

Stella's Cafe, Bluff

Pastry lovers rejoice, I have the perfect pie for you and it’s at Stella’s Café. Their mince and cheese pie is my favourite and you’ll find a pie to love at this iconic Bluff bakery. Options include: mince and cheese and bacon and egg, and the more interesting options like muttonbird, smoked salmon, and their exclusive oyster pies.
