Westmere's winner: Garnet Station Cafe does one of Auckland's best homemade pies.

What's not to like about the perfect pie? Wrapped in light-as-air pastry, brimming with top-quality meat, veges and with just the right amount of casserole, we've been scouting from Clevedon to Piha to discover Auckland's best pies. And we've made sure there's one for every occasion -  whether you prefer a potato top or a classic steak 'n' cheese or whether you've just come out of the water after a surf, been walking in the brisk morning air or are slowly waking on a Sunday, these are the best pies in Auckland to warm you up. Y'know the ones that taste so good, you're still talking about them long after the last mouthful. And if you have a favourite Auckland pie you love, why not share your recommendation on their Localist listing by checking out our bakery directory? Just remember, Auckland, always blow on the pie!

Kylie loved Garnet Station Cafe

A community hub with some of the best homemade pies in Auckland, Garnet Station Cafe's chef is on fire right now with the tasty pastry delights he's serving up. On one of the coldest Auckland June mornings, I was lucky enough to sit by the fire and indulge in a mince and cheese pie for breakfast. It was classically good and just the way us Kiwis like it with a little bit of tomato in the filling for a tasty twist. Verity and Lisa have also launched an incredibly delicious breakfast menu that sees Westmere locals flocking in each morning to get their fill. Most delightful dish on the brekky menu - the aptly named Cowgirl Beans. That's giant white Greek beans, a fried egg, chorizo from awesome deli Salash and toast. A great way to start a weekend!

The Fridge Cafe, Auckland

There's no better comfort food in winter than a pie and The Fridge in Kingsland creates some of the consistently best pies in Auckland. Handmade fresh daily, light-as-air pastry and the perfect fillings make for an experience to remember. This is one place that makes a real star of the humble pie and is one of my favourite winter spots to dine.

Kylie loved The Piha Store

With a dedicated pie chef cranking out soul-warming organic pies, The Piha Store is the place to sink your teeth into a delightful post-surf pie. The gravy is rich, the beef is melt-in-the-mouth miraculous and the pastry is so flaky you need to put the pie bag on your lap to catch the crumbs, if you're eating it in the car at the beach. I'm a local, have known the store owner, Pete, most of my life and am stoked as that some of the best pies in Auckland are just a five minute drive down the hill from home. These beauties often make my Sunday!

Eleanor loved Prego Restaurant

Prego’s pie certainly takes the crown for the most prestigious pie in the ranks, being nearly ten times as pricey as a small Muzza’s pie. Putting that aside, with Prego, you are paying for the experience - and the quality of both ingredients and location. Baked to order in flakey pastry, this lord among pies is served on potato mash with a port wine jus and promises to take your pie eating to a whole new level of sophistication. Fillings change regularly, so I suggest you save your pocket change and head there with an open mind and an empty stomach in anticipation of what your pie destiny may serve you.

Kylie loved With Relish Delicatessen

A few of my friends grew up in the Clevedon area and every single one of them recommended I stop at this old-fashioned deli when I drove through town on a recent road trip. That's because the homemade pies here are second to none! In fact, so tasty and flaky was the perfect pasty and delicious meaty filling that hubby and I had to do a detour on our way home so we could stop for a second time. There's a wide variety of pies, sausage rolls and incredible cakes that remind me of the ones my grandmother used to make. But of all the pies we tried (and there were three of us in the car so we got to sample a fair few!) the stand-out was the potato top pie. Crunchy, cheesy, melt-in-the-mouth mash sitting on a bed of perfectly seasoned savoury mince. Mine was so good, I almost forgot to share! Check this little local beauty out. It's well worth the visit.

Eleanor loved Greenland Bakery & Cafe

David Liem really knows his pies. Go for his award winning mince and cheese, which Michael Meredith called "classic… brought me back to my old school days, the visits to the tuck shop." On your next pie pilgrimage be sure to head out to Botany Downs - we hear their vegetarian pie is top notch, too!

Crafty Baker, Auckland

This is one of my favourite pie stops in West Auckland because crafty, creative baker Lee makes some of the tastiest baked goods in the North Island. There's no nasties in the breads, pies and pastries that he bakes with love and the pies are good. They're so good in fact that words can't describe the absolute perfectness of a Crafty Baker pie. I love that they use meat from the local butcher (who is also one of my fave butchers) too. That's why I encourage everyone to seek out this hidden gem in Glen Eden.

Rory loved Mairangi Bay Bakery

My local bakery when I lived on the Shore, I never had to go far to get my hands on a great pie. A traditional local bakery, there's a good range of filled rolls and sandwiches here, plus lots of sweet treats (try the apple turnovers). Must try pie: Steak & cheese.

Kylie loved Gladstone Butchery

What's not to love about a top-quality butcher that also serves up even better pies? Gladstone Butchery in Parnell is my new favourite hidden gem and that's because, along with their awesome meat selection, their mince and cheese pie is as good as my Grandma's - and that's saying something. Grandma's pie was my requested birthday meal as a kid for about eight years running... So if you want a pie like my Grandma made, go to Gladstone. Now!

Eleanor loved Muzzas Pies - Howick

Nestled in the sleepy suburb of Howick is Muzza’s pies, which is well worth a drive out to. The smaller pies are the most cost-effective on this list but I would say you should definitely go all out and get a family sized pie so everyone at home can experience the joy of pie. If it’s on offer when you go, grab the steak and oyster pie for the sake of exploration.
