Op Shops are the bees knees when it comes to finding fashion gems for pennies.

New Zealand is bursting with op shop gems and we’re super stoked about it. Admittedly it’s a bit funny walking around smelling like someone else's grandma for those first few days whilst you try and wash that awkwardly familiar-but-foreign op shop smell out of your new purchase. But the perks of going vintage are endless. You know that you’re strutting around in a one-of-a-kind outfit, you can sneak a few more espressos into your day knowing that you’ve scored a pretty good bargain, and it’s safe to say that if a mob of hipsters came charging your way you’d fit in like a classy second-hand glove. We’re taking note of New Zealand’s finest op shop moments by pointing out a few of our favourites for you to suss out.

The Vikings Haul, Woodville

This little hidden gem is in the small town of Woodville, inside you will find hundreds of books, kitchen items, vintage clothing and everything in between! Everything is always tidy easy to find and the owner knows every item he has in stock so if you are looking for something in particular he can help you find it! One of the best second hand stores I have ever been to!

Salvation Army Family Store, Hamilton

Next to Taupo and K-Road, Auckland, I think Hamilton is one of NZ’s best op shopping locations. The Sallies Family Store in Claudelands is a great place for second-hand furniture - I’ve recently become a big fab of upcycling, so was absolutely delighted to find some total bargains at my last stop there on the way to Taupo the other week. Check them out in the pic. These guys often put up goods on facebook as well - great for a sneak peak before buying. The Sallies are all over NZ and are SO worth it I think.

Hubbers Emporium, Southland

This shop is huge so if you want to get lost for a day in an antiques store, this one is for you. Hubbers Emporium is a really big antiques and collectables shop that has something for everyone. If you’re thinking furniture, homewares, clothes, pottery and jewellery, head along and see what you can score for yourself.

Jon’s Relics, Hokitika

You don't get much cooler than Jon's Relics. Located in an old barn in Hokitika, Jon's Relics is an excellent place to score yourself some amazing vintage and antique finds. I have filled my home with homewares from this little gem, including glass, kitchenware, ceramics and pottery.

Temuka Treasures, Temuka

Take a peek inside Temuka Treasures and discover for yourself an excellent array of antiques and collectables. Packed to the brim with country antiques and Kiwiana, your bags will be bulging when you leave.

Hunters and Collectors, Wellington

If you are on the search for the perfect vintage coat for the high streets of Wellington then you have to pop into Hunters and Collectors. Squeeze through the door and into a treasure trove of racks upon racks of great-quality secondhand and vintage digs. The ever-changing stock means that every visit is bound to sprout a bargain for the discerning shopper.

Finally Books, Birkenhead

Finally Books is a great little second-hand bookshop. Located in Hammond Place (to the right as you head into the mall carpark), they have a great selection of books at reasonable prices. If your toddler has a habit of tearing all the books you get from the library and you can't face the embarrassment of bringing them back in pieces, then grab some of their super cheap kids books and save yourself the hassle!

Junk & Disorderly, Northcote

Secondhand furniture can be a great option if you are renovating on a tight budget or if you want to fill your home with one-of-a-kind pieces. And no-one does a better job than curating curios than Junk & Disorderly. A haven of quirky homewares, it's a great place to go and find the kind of furniture that will make your house a home. And we all know that first impressions count for buyers so if you want to make a big one when your house is going to auction, check out this North Shore treasure trove.

Trash Palace, Porirua

For all your needs, with everything you could ever want. That pretty much almost sums up trash palace with an array of electrical items, whiteware, furniture and more. Run as a way of recycling goods that were destined for landfill, you can find bargains on lots of great things. With any money spent here helping the Mana recovery trust provide support for those with mental health needs.
