Let Your Feet Do The Walking: One of the most spectacular (and free) ways to get amongst our jaw-droppingly beautiful countryside is to hike the Tasman Glacier.

Known as the world's adventure playground, there's so many great free things to do throughout New Zealand. If you're looking to explore nature, enjoy a holiday thrill or simply be involved with one of the many awesome experiences that our country is known for, why not save some cash and try out these fun 'n' free activities that don't cost a cent. If you have a free activity that you love, why not share your love for it on their Localist listing? Life is rich, New Zealand!

If you want to explore our cities, here's some great ideas for free things to do in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch

Mt Eden (Maungawhau), Auckland

The best insider tip that I can give in my local is to take a walk up Mt Eden. My favourite time to go is at night because the city looks precious from up there. The long road is for taking it easy and the short road is steeper. Either way the view from the top is well worth the effort.

Mokena Geyser, Te Aroha

Nothing is more NZ than witnessing our natural geothermal activity and a friend from the Waikato took me to this really cool little spot just out of Te Aroha. The Mokena Geyser is free to see and is the only natural soda water geyser in the world. Plus it's just a five minute walk to get to and once you've seen it, you can soak in the mineral pools that it supplies just around the corner. Free fun and total bliss!

Over the Moon Dairy Company, Waikato

As I'm a bit of a cheese-o-holic, I love Over the Moon! A small, boutique cheesemaking company, affiliated with the NZ Cheese School, they make all my favourites and more- halloumi, fetas, hard cheese, soft cheese..! Look out for them in stores, or pop into their shop in Putaruru for a taste.

Mangapohue Natural Bridge, Waitomo

Head out of Waitomo Village and towards Marokopa to experience this ancient wonder. It's an incredible natural bridge that was once part of a limestone cave formation. You wind down an easy walkway into a jaw-dropping cavern of mossy rocks , home to fossils that are 25 million years old. The walk takes about 20 minutes to do the whole loop and I love to marvel at all the natural wonders along the way. Plus it's pretty easy walking so family friendly. A sweet-as, free Kiwi activity!

Kaiate Falls, Mount Maunganui

This beautiful waterfall is a great place to escape the city for a bit of fresh forest air and relaxation. The falls are tucked in a forest reserve where the Kaiate Stream drops over the rocks to create nine small falls. The main track leads to the top of the waterfall and then to the base of the upper falls. If the sun's out there's also a swimming hole and a picnic area where you can enjoy an awesome views of The Mount.

Weta Cave, Wellington

Journey out to Miramar to find Weta Cave, offering you the ability to see some of the pieces created for the Lord of the Rings trilogies and more that have been created by the artists at Weta Workshop. Entry is free with a short documentary available to view as well; guided tours are available at a small cost too.

Vintage Car & Machinery Museum, Geraldine

The Vintage Car and Machinery Museum is a favourite of mine (if you can believe!). I love a classic car, and I particularly love this collection of vintage automobiles. If you like REALLY old cars, check out the VCAMM’s 1907 De Dion-Bouton – these wheels are really impressive. Oh, and if you fancy yourself more of a tractor kind of girl / guy, there’s 101 tractors to take a peek at too!

Tasman Glacier, Mount Cook

Fancy a hike? Well at 27km, long and 3km wide, the Tasman Glacier could be just the perfect place to strap on those walking boots. One of the country’s largest glaciers, this beauty is worth making a trip to be it in summer or winter. I particularly like the Tasman Lake at the foot of the glacier – it’s truly breathtaking.
