Volcanic Action: Ohope Beach in eastern Bay Of Plenty is an awesome holiday destination with views to White Island.

When the long weekend arrives, there's nothing better than heading off on a great escape. There's so many awesome adventures to be had in Auckland and within just a few hours drive. And if you want to enjoy true wanderlust and simply decide on the best spots once you rock up, why not download Localist's app so you can get sweet local recommendations wherever you travel.

Pippa loved Ohope Beach

The best long white sandy beach in the Eastern Bay of Plenty. Most of the time the surf is just right for body boarding. The beach is 11km long, at one end a bush-clad headland and the other the sheltered bird-watching mecca Ohiwa Harbour. An absolute holiday paradise. There’s swimming, diving, fishing, walks and views out to smoking volcano White Island and closer in Whale Island and the East Cape.

Ari loved Motutere Bay

Motutere Bay is a popular spot for holiday makers who enjoy some laid back camping in one of the most beautiful locations in Taupo (and quite possibly the Central North Island). Great for a spin around on the lake on a sea biscuit and other fun water sports.

Kylie loved Rakino Island

Rakino Island is a top spot for a long weekend away from Auckland. I love the fact that you only need to jump on a ferry in downtown Auckland and within 45 minutes you are chilling at your weekend island destination. There's lots of baches you can book online. A great place to go with family or your mates to totally relax.

Waipu Cove Beach, Waipu Cove

A quiet little beach where the sand is soft and the water sparkles crystal blue. Claim your piece of paradise with a book and a towel during lazy days. Perfect for holidays.

Kauaeranga River, Coromandel

Ace swim spot. You can get down to the river all along the valley. Popular points are Hoffman's Pool and there's a sandy bank down river from the Shag Stream Campground. Beautiful fresh water to cool off in after a long summer day.
