Us Kiwis love to get out in the sunshine! Whether is a dip at the local watering hole to cool off or it's a brisk bush walk to get amongst the serenity of nature. But what if you could combine these two loves to make an amazing bush walk and waterfall wondrous combo? We've found the best bush walks in Auckland that will lead you straight to majestic waterfalls - cause there's nothing quite like a bush walk with a surprise ending.

I love this walk so much. Not only is it pretty easy going, but the view and the swim at the the base of the falls at the end of the walk is absolutely phenomenal, as is the scenery as you walk. It's only 1.8km, so it's not hard going, but it's still so nice to get out in nature and explore a bit.

If you want to marvel at the best examples of Tane Mahuta (god of the forest) in Auckland then a trip out West to the Cascade Kauri Regional Park is well worth the mission. This park, located on Falls Rd - just head down past the Waitakere Golf Club - is full of majestic Kauri trees and there's lots of different options for play. If you've got little ones, take a picnic and chill out or stroll along the well-defined boardwalk. Or if you enjoy tramping as much as I do, strap on some sturdy boots and go off-piste on one of the more challenging trails that links up to the Waitakere Dam. This is an awesome slice of Kiwi paradise. No wonder then it's one of the Auckland walks Oprah Winfrey chose to do when she visited the city.

Mokoroa Falls is a great short walk with stunning views and a great way to spend the day out these ways. The waterfall is so impressive and amazing and we found a spot to have a picnic.

Nothing better than getting out of a hot car, mid-road trip, for a little bush walk. Even better when it ends with a swim under a spectacular waterfall! Makes you realise how incredibly lucky we are to live in this lovely country. Ahhh.

I used to live just a stone's throw from this magical hidden gem in Auckland's Waitakere Ranges and the dogs and I would trek up and down here most days. Fairy Falls is best viewed in the cooler months after a big rainfall so that the waterfalls are running strong. My advice is to leave a car at the top and bottom and start at the Scenic Drive end so the walk is all downhill (very important if you plan to do it with kids!). The native bush down towards the waterfalls is full of cascading ferns, punga and native bird life, such as the kereru (wood pigeon) and there's lots of great little resting stops. But it's the falls itself that will capture your imagination as they cascade from rock pool to rock pool. TIP: Take sturdy shoes after the rain because there are parts that can be slippery!

Just 60km from Auckland's CBD is one of the South's most beautiful, picturesque places - the powerful and picture-perfect Hunua Falls. One of the many fantastic natural phenomena in the gorgeous Hunua Ranges that flank the south of the city, these falls are very easy to get to and there is picnic and toilet facilities near by. To get the best view of the rushing white water cascading down the rock face, it's worth setting aside an extra half-hour and taking in the vista of the falls and surrounding native forest from all angles. The track is well sign-posted from the car park near the falls. However, swimming is not recommended as it can be dangerous.
