Night Rider: Rainbow's End comes alive as it gets lit up for their first-ever Ignite The Night event.

School's out and the holidays are here! Hoorah for the weekend. Make the most of it by checking out a local event and celebrating in splendidly spectacular style. Light up the night at Rainbow's End's highly anticipated new event. On Saturday evening, this much-loved Auckland theme park kicks off the first of three special Ignite The Nights events, which lets families experience their famous rides in a totally different way - at night and illuminated. Keen to get your groove on? Don't miss the city's most unusual annual party - A Weird Night Out - at The Mahatma Gandhi Centre in Newton. Or there's plenty happening in the suburbs. That's why we've talked to locals to find the top five local events to check out for the weekend.

1) Be A Night Owl: Ignite The Nights at Rainbow's End
Whether you've got kids or are just a big kid at heart, Rainbow's End is the place to be on Saturday night with its first-ever Ignite The Nights series kicking off. There's amazing things to see at every turn at this Manukau attraction with lights, action and fire-fuelled performances. You can ride your favourite rides in a whole new way, celebrate as they light up the Fearfall sign on July 9 and be starry eyed as you are catapulted through the night. The event runs from 5pm to 11pm this Saturday and if you can't make this one - there's two more happening on July 16 and 23. Hot Local Tip: Purchase your tickets online before 6pm on the Friday before the event to save money. Gate sales are limited and won't start until 5pm. For more info, head here.

2) Dance Your Cares Away: Weird Night Out at Mahatma Gandhi Centre
Known as one of Auckland's most unique and good-time annual parties, awesome local band Weird Together once again bring forth their riot of colour, sound and synergy. Last year's event to kick off the re-opening of the St James Theatre was a sell-out and with Nick D, Dick Johnson and their crew supported by Basement Donuts, Aroha and MC Slave's legendary Logg Cabin (to name but a few), it's a night to dress your best and let your flamboyancy flow. The celebration of global music and culture kicks off at 7pm and goes until midnight. For more info, head here.

3) Matariki Memories: Te Ara Rama Light Trail at Maybury Reserve
It's the fourth time Maybury Reserve in Glen Innes will play host to the annual Matariki Light Trail. The awesome community event sees the park walkways lit up so that families can stroll through the night. Taking place from Thursday to Saturday between 6pm - 7pm, it's a great free event for the family with some of the best fireworks in town. For more info, head here

4) Have A Laugh: Comedy On The Mountain at Onehunga Mangere United Sports Club
Live near Mangere Bridge? Want to get your giggle on for Saturday night? Some of New Zealand's finest comedians are stepping out into the suburbs for this one-off, fundraiser event for the club. Starting at 8pm and costing just $20, it's a chance to shake off the working week with friends and a few wines. Hosted by local comedian Nick Rado. For more info, head here

5) Eat Local: The Little Latin American Market at Beso Latinos
Celebrate Sunday mornings by heading to Latin America in Auckland. At popular Latin American restaurant Beso Latinos in Elliott Stables, you can indulge in a morning coffee or Atole (Mexican hot drink) and chow down on tamales, locro and facturas while listening to live performances from local Latin American artists.
