Doughy Goodness: Buttery scones are perfect for any occasion.
Whether you prefer them savoury or sweet and dolloped with butter or jam, there's nothing quite like nibbling on a fresh, bouncy scone and sipping on a cuppa or a good, strong latte. For some it's all about the classic, chewy, cheesy creation while other people prefer their flavour to be date with orange. There's also lots of awesome new takes on a scone too by Kiwi bakers all over the country. That's why we've scoured New Zealand to find the very best scones.
Plus, if you have a local that can make a scone to die for, why not share your love for them on Localist?
Nectar, Whangarei
Delicious food and great staff. And theres always something nice in the cabinet if theres not enough time to order from the menu! Love this place
Three Beans Coffee Roasters, Auckland
Three Beans is the new kid on the block, a fine addition to the Sheds at City Works Depot. Sit at the big communal table indoors, positioned to catch the morning sun, and enjoy a coffee and one of the delicious scones.
The Tea Lady, Auckland
The Tea LAdy is a real litle gem in Birkenhead offering delicious home baked goodies, old English sweet shop treats, and a lovely range of teas. Funky retro decor and all the touches that make an afternoon tea a bit special. Lovely for a rainy afternoon!
Puhoi Cottage Tearooms, Puhoi
Popped into this calm, peaceful tea room for my father’s birthday. The friendly staff told us that this is the oldest tearoom in New Zealand. Indoor and outdoor seating with lots of fruit trees growing out back. Not much food to choose from but definitely give their scones a go! It’s delicious! My sister and mother loved their homemade pies as well. They also have gluten free items, and dont forget to try their tea!
Frasers Cafe, Auckland
I found it! The BEST date scone in the North Island!!! I have been 'researching' for years now & THIS IS IT!! Delicious toasted with way too much butter mmm!
Queenies Lunchroom, Auckland
A triumph of a cheese scone washed down with two flat white coffees got my morning off to a ripper of a start. Queenies is known in Ponsonby as being home to one of the best cheese scones in the local area. Oh and their date and orange is also pretty amazing too.
Deckchair Cafe, Mount Maunganui
Real tea in a teapot & amazing date scones
Luca Cafe, Mount Maunganui
Amazing coffee, with a selection of the usual but also drip and filter. The pastries are devine and the decor is super cute. One of my favourite cafes!
Mavis & Co Catering, Hamilton
Big fan of Mavis & Co, the baking is just too tantalisingly good. I've had breakfast, lunch, and lots of snack stops and meetings here - funky interior, great selection and always a queue because everyone knows how good it is. Best to not come during peak lunch hours as can get a little too busy.
Urban Deli, Napier
The best thing about this café is its pick and mix salad bar where you get to select and build your own awesome sandwich or salad. Most of the baked goods are made on site. Urban Deli is good value and a popular lunchtime destination.
Catherines Kitchen, Greytown
This place is just too cute. We were driving through Greytown on our way to Wellington and stopped in here for a mid-morning snack. Couldn’t resist their High Tea after seeing another couple get it at the table next to ours. Along with the cakes they have a few delicate sandwiches and their hot chocolates are delicious.
Lamason, Wellington
The coolest little addition to the coolest capital! These guys do a really good coffee and delicious cheese scones and pinwheels. Be quick though, they sell out of their food items super quick because they're so popular.
Prefab, Wellington
The coolest urban cafe you can find in Wellington. They make their own bread and patisserie, they roast their own coffee, they make the best pizza and they have the coolest airplane propeller-ventilator on the ceiling!
Caffe L'affare, Wellington
Awesome airy place to catch up with a group of friends over brunch of lunch. Their all-day breakfast menu also makes it a great place for a late Sunday hangover recovery #cafetab
Aromas Coffee Lounge, New Plymouth
Aromas Coffee Lounge is another busy place at lunch time. My cousin from Australia comes here every time she’s over for a visit, and I typically join her, the cheese and mushroom bread cases and to die for that we usually grab two! Not to mention they also do some of the best milkshakes around including cookies and cream which is my favourite. Sweet or savoury, this café wins for originality with their food and also for flavour. You can usually grab a few things and a drink for under $10; a great and cheap lunch right in the middle of town!
Chicoti's, Christchurch
Well! What can one say about this place - it is outstanding. The food IS FRESH daily, made on site by Paul, Randal and Lovely Murray. Absolutely delicious, with a a daily winter soup, daily muffin, sandwiches made there and then with the fillings you ask for. Cakes and biscuits from your grandmothers recipe books. This is my local and has been for 18 years and I kid you not the place deserves a GOLD MEDAL for being the cleanest cafe with the friendliest staff - who get to know you and honestly take time to really care about their local people. This place is a haven.
Beano’s Bakery, Waikouaiti
Beano’s Bakery is a local favourite. Take your pick from their pies and sandwiches to scones and sweet treats like lamingtons, eclairs and biscuits. You’ll go mad for their amazing selection.
