Portland Public House: These cats serve up cool drinks and delicious eats in Kingsland daily!

Before or after a big game at Eden Park, the bars in Kingsland are buzzing. When you can't get your mitts on tix, watch from the comfort of The Kingslander– then head upstairs for a gig at Nectar. If that's not your scene there'll be more music over at The Portland Public House or head to The Clare Inn for a quiet pint. When the sun's up, the courtyard bars of Neighbourhood and Citizen Park are beloved by all who enter. Whether your team wins or loses, good times are guaranteed.

Johnny loved The Portland Public House

Is it possible that Jake the Muss and Beth Heke have been doing nothing but taking cooking classes together since Once For Warriors finished filming? Is it possible the famous couple have become an incredibly savvy chefing team who’ve designed a beautiful and homely menu for the Portland Public House? Smoked fish fillets, Maori ceviche with fresh Kahawai, pork shoulder and brisket boil-up, and a spicy mussel pot, amongst other things...could it all be true? And of course throw in weekly live music (Jake was such a great singer), a stack of craft beers (he loved a good brew too), and artisan wines, all in an uber-comfy lounge, with a backyard for balmy summer nights. If it was Jake and Beth, I commend you Portland Public House, if not, ka pai, I still love you, you're the highlight of Kingsland.

Felicity loved Citizen Park

Always packed and full of interesting people, Citizen Park is the place I have taken everyone who visits from out of town. Their menu is simple but delicious. I love the low lighting and the community dining feel of the place. Their food is very American fusion and includes a lot of Mexican style dishes - which is my favourite. They often have a DJ which adds a bit of a party feel to the eatery.

Neighbourhood Brewbar, Kingsland

This place is great if you want somewhere casual to go for an affordable beer and a burger. They do really good chips with aioli which I like to pair with a Mac’s cider. There's a big outdoor space to sit in or if it’s cold out, the inside is always toasty warm. Big food for a big appetite at this one!

Ben loved The Kingslander

The Kingslander is your classic pre-Eden park watering hole - it's always packed when the All Blacks are playing and perhaps even more so when Origin's on. So why not park up a seat and stay all day today - the atmosphere's almost as intense as the stadium and the beer is a lot better!

Caitlin loved Nectar Bar

Nectar is my most recent discovery and one I’m thrilled to have made. It’s certainly a hidden gem – nestled on the floor above the notorious Kingslander pub on New North Rd, it’s basically invisible from the street. But once you get upstairs you’ll find it’s an impressively large space. The dancefloor can hold a significant crowd (and it was packed with jumping, grinding rock fans the night I was there). The outdoor area is gorgeous, and even on a freezing winter night it’s a great place to hang out as they have several cozy couches you can snuggle on and an ample fireplace which creates a lovely, romantic vibe. The friendly and professional bar staff agreed to make my friends and I a surprise cocktail – a move which often backfires, but this one actually turned out to be a really tasty concoction! So I do recommend making the most of their expertise. All-in-all an awesome experience, the bands shone but so did the venue. If you’re looking to take a date out to dinner and then some live music, check Nectar’s gig schedule – it could be exactly what you’re after, especially with the vast array of awesome restaurants nearby. You’ll thank me when you’re cozying up together by Nectar’s fireplace later that night!

Anitra loved Clare Inn

The Clare Inn is your typical English/Irish style pub - quite old school with old paintings and drawings on the walls and serving up Guinness to every second man who walks up to the bar. Very authentic Irish! The two occasions I visited this place were quite pleasant. For one it was a leaving party which was held upstairs because you are able to hire that bit out exclusively. The food served was delicious, I actually think I sat by a plate of food all night and didn’t really socialise. Also the wine being served was very nice (Pinot Gris). There was a live band on downstairs but you couldn’t really hear it that bad from upstairs which was good and there was just some of my friends own music playing upstairs. All in all it is a nice, quaint bar.
