Kylie loved Dragonfired Pizza
You’ll find this superb pizza oven caravan on Little Oneroa beach during the summer, perfect for a twilight beach dinner, take down a bottle of wine and a beach cricket set, great way to end the day. They have Eftpos too.
Aunty Mena Vegetarian Restaurant & Cafe, Wellington
Aunty Mena is hands down the thing I miss most about living in Wellington. The food is amazingly fresh, tasty, made right in front of you and served with a sweet smile from one of the lovely family members who all work there. It's a sweet little dive and one where you can get cozy for an hour or so and while away a rainy day. It's very vegetarian friendly but I've taken plenty of meat lovers here and they survive and leave with a full belly and a matching grin.
Vulcan Lane Bagels, Auckland
When I want to breakfast or lunch like a Queen by spending just a collection of gold coins, there is no other place in Auckland I go than Vulcan Lane Bagels. These bagels are out-of-this-world wicked and such a good price! I almost fell over backwards when my order was passed to me the first time I visited because there's so many toppings on the bagel and the sauces - oh the sauces! - so delicious. The coffee is brewed long, strong and smooth too and that's why this place has fast become one of my inner-city addictions.
The Little Waffle Shop, Wellington
On Courteny Place in a hole in the wall shop, there is the Little Waffle Shop. Nice and clean fit-out, open 7 days for your pleasure. With a variety of toppings to go with your freshly made waffle. Good place for a snack, or desert on a night out
Tommy Millions, Wellington
Tommy Million’s comes into its own in the summertime – because it’s perfectly located for you to grab a pizza to take to the waterfront or Frank Kitts Park. Order it by the slice or by the box and check out the daily deals. Plus you could go the whole hog and get a carton of its creamy gelato to go, too.
Dimitri's Greek Food, Christchurch
World famous in Christchurch, Dimitri's has been around for as long as I can remember. Their delicious souvlakis are certainly hard to beat, particularly the falafel option. There's always queues lining up at Dimitri's but trust me, it's well worth the wait.
Mamacitas, Christchurch
Probably the closest Christchurch comes to producing genuinely authentic Mexican food. Try the burrito, and quesadillas. The portions are slightly on the small side so it may mean you’ll need to go back for seconds. But that’s okay because it’ll be amazing.
Le Vietnamese Kitchen, Auckland
Brand new to Ponsonby, delectable Vietnamese cuisine. The chef has 17 years experience in Vietnam. Fresh vegetables are delivered daily along with other locally sourced ingredients. I need to go back and check out the rest of the menu!! highly rate the coconut prawns and fresh prawn and pork belly spring rolls !
Maldito Mendez, Auckland
So, this place is a cozy wee nook in Ponsonby Central but my, my, it has some very spectacular Spanish/Mexican food! I had the clam, squid and chorizo paella and broccolini to share with my squeeze, and a killer virgin margarita, and we both left full and happy. The interior is fabulous and the atmosphere buzzing. Go there now.
El Sizzling Chorizo, Auckland
Not a place to take vegetarian friends or when you’re feeling like a ‘light snack’, El Sizzling Chorizo specialise in hearty, delicious Argentinian barbecue feasts that will keep you full for days. Just the smell will get your tastebuds tingling, so make sure you arrive with an empty belly and an open mind.
The White Lady, Auckland
(Tenth place) Due to the scheduling of my visits to Auckland’s oldest foodtruck, The White Lady and I don’t always have the clearest picture of our relationship, but I know for sure that I’m a happy customer. The burgers are large and delicious and the staff are always friendly, even after more than 60 years serving the nightlife on the city’s streets. The menu has maybe too many options for the functionally drunk to safely navigate, but no matter what you pick you’ll be greedily spilling burger fillings onto the moonlit street with a grin on your face, that much I can guarantee.
Peasant, Auckland
Brother’s John and Simon Yip have swam against the current and made the move not from NZ to Aussie, but vice versa. The boys from Sydney, along with their friend Willie (formerly of Teed St. Larder and the Grove) have stripped what used to be Two Monkeys Vietnamese down to its skeleton, resulting in a warm and welcoming, glasshouse-like aesthetic. Staying true to their roots (and to the chefing that’s taken place in that kitchen for the past decade), the boys have designed a modern-Vietnamese menu with fresh takes on traditional items. “We use the most authentic Vietnamese ingredients we can possibly source to make the food a real as possible.” Braised brisket, pork belly with smoked quail eggs, stuffed squid, as well as house smoked salmon rice paper rolls, and black sticky rice with mango - the youthful Yip brothers get adventurous but value their heritage.
