Oh ice cream you are our summer saviour!

Ice Cream is our favourite summer treat here at Localist, in fact we just can't get enough of it! So we've been busy looking for the biggest ice creams in the country to satisfy our ice cream cravings (and yours). Check out these top spots to get some seriously huge ice creams at great prices.

Te Kao Local Store, Kaitaia

A place that has an ice cream serve called the whoppa stoppa is quite rightly top of the list for biggest ice creams in the country. Now some of us wouldn't even try to consume that much ice cream but for ice cream fans it's a pretty spectacular treat. It balances at 6 scoops high which is pretty impressive and is probably best eaten with help but you will certainly enjoy the experience!

Blue Ice Cream Cafe, Matakana

If you're driving north through Matakana you must stop at Blue Ice Cream Cafe which is the home of the amazing OOB Organic Ice Cream. OOB is off the charts as far as ice cream goes, it's made from real fruit and is so delicious, their flavours are really creative too. Blueberry is a personal favourite of mine and you can see and taste the real blueberries which is awesome, I also love the licorice flavour which is much more delicious than you would think, the licorice flavour translates really well into ice cream. This place is super popular in summer though so make sure you allow enough time for a visit. The prices are really good too and you can buy tubs to take away with you.

Highway 10 Takeaways, Waipapa

Guilty treats are Highway 10 Takeaway’s speciality. I went in to buy a coke and came out with oysters, chips, fried chicken and a massive ice cream - so delicious! Their food is definitely not for keeping it slim over summer time. But hey, everyone needs to indulge every now and then… and this place is great!

Ollies Burgers & Ice Cream, Auckland

It's definitely a huge achievement to be consistently awesome for 40 years, but Ollie's has done it and what I love best about this place is the ice cream. Known as the cheapest in Auckland, Ollie's has huge serves of ice cream at great prices and the sundaes are the retro kind you remember from your childhood. It's always worth a trip out to Royal Oak to visit Ollies.

Pokeno Takeaways, Pokeno

Pokeno Takeaways is a place you must stop in summer when you're driving south from Auckland. They have a huge selection of ice cream flavours scooped into a cone just like I remember from being a kid. Their prices are pretty laid back too and great value. I'm a fan of the old-school favourites like rum & raisin and hokey pokey of course, but they do have lots of other cool varieties including peanut butter. This place is also famous for their 15 scoop ice cream so if you're feeling like an ice cream fest it's well worth a try, although you might need some help from your friends!

Chadwick Road Dairy, Tauranga

Great value rolled ice creams are often hidden in the ‘burbs. This ‘foodmarket’ in the Greerton Village Shopping Centre is renowned for value for money when it comes to icecream in a cone. The servings are large and the prices cheap. It’s also a great old school outdoor shopping centre to wander around while you eat your purchase.

Rush Munro's Ice Cream Gardens, Hastings

This iconic ice creamery has been churning out ice cream since 1926. In that time they have become one of the most awarded boutique producers in New Zealand. Their latest accolade was The Supreme Award for Boutique Manufacturer at this year’s New Zealand Ice Cream Awards. It’s all natural, hand crafted, batch churned, with sun-ripened fruit, farm fresh cream and pure cane sugar and all very yummy. Of the 22 flavours there are loads of gluten-free options available, served in a tub. The products are widely available across the Bay, but part of the experience is to take the family to the site of Rush Munroe’s since 1931, the iconic Ice Cream Gardens in Hastings.

Kaffee Eis Oriental Bay, Wellington

Producing some mighty fine ice cream, gelato and sorbet across the wellington region, you can choose from a wide range of flavours and at the price of $4.50 a scoop you get some great excellent quality for your money. They have a monopoly almost over all the summer time hot spots with spaces on the waterfront near Frank Kitts Park, Oriental Parade, Courtney Place and on Cuba Street, so wherever you are you probably able to get to one if you feel like a scoop in the sunshine.

Hamish's Ice Creams and Cafe, Nelson

Mapua Wharf is a great destination for a sunny day - by bike or by car - and once you get there there are several options of refreshment but if it’s ice cream you are after go to Hamish’s cafe. Named after Mapua’s resident White Heron, Hamish’s serves over 20 flavours of real fruit ice cream made with local berries, and has an outdoor seating area where you can sit and watch the bike ferry go in and out. The ice creams are generously sized and delicious.

Rob Roy Dairy, Dunedin

Rob Roy Dairy or otherwise known as ‘Rob Roy Designer Desserts’ has great ice cream, and not to mention the amazing fruit soft serve with yogurt base. That’s pretty darn good too. The servings are bigger and the prices are low. What’s not to love about that?
