New Zealand is the place to be for hot pool fun, especially in winter.
Nothing beats a good soak in one of the best hot pools in New Zealand. Soak in South Island scenery at high country favourite hot tubs Omarama, Onsen Hot Pools in Arthurs Point and Maruia Springs Thermal Resort in Lewis Pass. Or head to North Island's most popular spots such as Waiwera Infinity Thermal Spa Resort in Auckland or Miranda Hot Pools. From the best and most well-known hot pools in New Zealand locals love to lesser known gems, such as Great Barrier Island's Kaitoke Hot Springs, these are the spots locals love to rest and relax.
Plus if you have a favourite New Zealand hot springs you love, why not share your recommendation on their Localist listing?
Kaitoke Hot Pools, Great Barrier Island
A beautiful hidden gem. What better way to chillax than under the canopy of the trees in a river of warm flowing water. Good for the soul.
Hot Tubs Omarama, Omarama
An outdoor wood-fired hot tub all to yourself. Private changing rooms, and complimentary water. Yours to soaks in for over an hour.
Maruia Springs Thermal Resort, Maruia Springs
Warm up these colder months and head to Maruia Springs Thermal Resort. Here you can indulge in the natural heat of the springs. Stay the night in their epic accommodation or stay a few hours to revel in this natural wonder. Whenever I'm heading West I stop here - summer or winter!
Taranaki Thermal Spa, Taranaki
Taranaki Thermal Spa is the best and only place around to get an actual thermal spa. You can choose a low, medium or hot temperature, to suit you but there’s really not a lot of difference as it only ranges about one degree. They provide you with ice cold mineral water to drink while you’re in the spa because it can get pretty hot in there. They are also a beauty treatment centre where they provide facials, massages, waxing and relaxation packages. A very nice place to relax and wind down after a long day.
Morere Hot Springs, Gisborne
With 250,000 litres a day of hot ancient sea water passing through the springs this place is well-worth a stop between Gisborne and Napier. You are spoilt for choice with six hot or cold pools, set in 364 hectares of ancient rain forest. My favourite are a short 10-minute walk through a nikau-fringed forest, overlooking the Mangatawa Stream - hot, steamy and truly healing.
Wairakei Terraces and Thermal Health Spa, Taupo
Winter weekends should always start with a dip in a hot thermal spa - and Taupo is the place to be when it comes to hot pools. It's the perfect way to warm you up, and get totally relaxed for the week and weekend ahead - the minerals are great for your skin too!
Awakeri Hot Springs, Whakatane
The most relaxing place in the Bay. With their mineral pools is a great place to stay and enjoy the ambience and serenity. Beautiful immaculate facilities friendly staff make it a home away from home. Love sharing the meals we cook up on one of the several bbqs avail able poolside. Paradise.
Miranda Hot Springs, Miranda
Miranda Hot Springs is one of the big hidden gems of the Waikato. They’ve got a pool specially for children where the water temperature is maintained at a slightly cooler temperature for their comfort and safety. My littel brother had his birthday party here a few years back and it was aboslutely perfect for a crowd.
Ngawha Hot Springs, Kaikohe
It's lovely to sink yourself into a sizzling hot pool when the air is icy frigid outside. A visit to Ngawha is just the ticket and a great place to bring guests too. It's pretty cheap ($5 or $10) and there are two hot pools you can go to. The first one you reach is run privately, the second one is run by the local iwi. I went to the first one before but I'd be keen to try out the second one (I've heard whispers that it's better). Either way this is a fabulous winter activity sure to warm your bones!
Te Aroha Mineral Spas, Te Aroha
Indulge and rejuvenate your mind and body with a spring clean! Te Aroha Mineral Spas have a unique feel, with Wooden Tubs or Classic Baths in individual rooms, so friends and couples can enjoy private relaxation. They also offer a variety of massage and beauty treatments to really make you feel lush.
Tekapo Springs, Tekapo
Hot springs. Skating rink. Tube park. Waterslide. Café. How can one place offer so many amazing activities? Well, if you’re Tekapo Springs it’s easy! This recreation facility located on Mt John in Lake Tekapo is superb. Take the whole family or grab yourself a romantic weekend getaway.
Tokaanu Thermal Pools, Taupo
This is a fantastic place to take the kids after a day in the snow. There’s also a special children’s pool right alongside the deeper adult pool so parents can keep an eye on their kids while relaxing in the hot thermal waters on Takaanu.
Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools & Spa, Hanmer Springs
This is one of the best hot pools in New Zealand, whatever the weather. Hanmer Springs is a natural thermal resort and the Hammer hot pools in the middle of town is the place to come to enjoy a good soak. The hubby and I visited during our honeymoon and whiled away a few glorious hours in the healing thermal waters. I've also been here after a three-day rave in the Southern Alps and the hottest pool at Hanmer was the best way to soothe my calves after an intense dancing experience.
