Easter holidays mean you've got lots of time to indulge in locally made hot cross buns.

Doughy, delectable and perfect toasted and slathered with a whole lotta New Zealand butter, hot cross buns are the ultimate indulgence leading up to Easter. And there's amazing local bakeries around the country smashing out super-delicious buns daily to satisfy our appetites. We've been taste-testing a whole bunch up and down the country and come up with these great spots to indulge in some of the best hot cross buns in New Zealand. Yummo!

Swiss Bakery Patisserie & Cafe, Milford

Baked fresh and so full of flavour! They have a great range of yummy savory and sweet food and do an amazing hot cross bun at Easter. I love their filled rolls which are huge and so full with filling that it is such good value for money. My favourate is the jam filled donuts which are so fresh and soft that they just melt in your mouth, not much parking so better to park at the mall and walk across the road. Give this place a try next time you are in Milford!

Colonial Bakery, Invercargill

Colonial Bakery really knows their buns - their hot cross buns that is! Colonial Bakery makes award winning buns which are the best in the region - they have the awards to prove it, too.

Jacksons Bakery & Cafe, Havelock North

Well-known for creating some of the best baked goods in New Zealand, Jacksons Bakery is a sure-fire winner for a doughy, delicious hot cross bun. They don't bring their best buns out until just a few weeks before Easter so late March is the ideal time to visit Jeni and Neville and get munching on their delicious treats. I'm so hungry right now, I think I'll be making a stop on the way home.

Scratch Bakers, Auckland CBD

I love Scratch Bakers at Easter for their delicious hot cross buns. They are delectable and downright tasty. In fact, I kinda like to go there every day before the long weekend to indulge in a fresh one. I also love to order a strong and smooth Three Beans brew as it's the ideal way to wash these puppies down.

The Swedish Bakery and Cafe, Nelson

Love this bakery - tucked away in a little corner of town they make the best European pastries, tasty treats and of course they will have yummy traditionally hand made hot cross buns for Easter.

Waikato Farmers Markets, Hamilton

If you want to find the best hot cross buns in Hamilton, then you’ll have to scurry down to the Farmers Market on Easter Sunday. Bella Pane has warm, glorious hot cross buns that are (get this) - GLUTEN FREE! Yes, that’s right. No longer do those among us with gluten intolerances need to put up with no buns or average ones, these ones will wow you whether or not you can’t eat gluten.

Olaf's Artisan Bakery & Cafe, Mt Eden

This Easter, stop by Olaf's in Mt Eden for arguably the best hot cross buns in town. They'll be open on Good Friday and Easter Monday, but make sure to get your orders in well in advance to avoid missing out.

Kidds Cakes & Bakery, Christchurch

The recently re-located and expanded Kidds bakery always has queues out the door, with hungry revelers lining up to grab their pies - and now also their hot cross buns. That's because this awesome little local in St Albans has just been voted the best bakers in NZ for their Easter treats. And if you're going to roll with a pie instead (and you won't be disappointed!) local favourites are by far the mince and mince and cheese so be sure to get in quick for those tasty beasts!
